New book offers valuable advice on Every Child Matters19 May 2006 – David Fulton Publishers has today published a highly anticipated book on the Government’s Every Child Matters Change for Children Programme (ECM). Written by Rita Cheminais, senior adviser for SEN in Cheshire Children’s Services, Every Child Matters: A Practical Guide for Teachers clearly explains the impact of the strategy for teachers working from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 4. It follows the success of the author’s recent book, Every Child Matters: A Practical Guide for SENCOs. Every Child Matters is a new integrated multi-agency joined up approach to meeting the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19. The Government’s aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being. Over the next few years, every local authority will be working with its partners to find out what works best for children and young people in its area, and act on it. Rita Cheminais believes the ECM programme makes a significant contribution to the nurturing and education of the whole child. “The strategy acknowledges that pupil performance and well-being go hand in hand. Children and young people cannot learn if they do not feel safe or if health problems create barriers. Teachers have been given the important task of changing the way they teach to focus on the child’s whole well-being, and not solely on their learning. I hope this book will provide them with useful guidance on how to respond to the challenges and opportunities ECM presents.” Every Child Matters: A Practical Guide for Teachers provides a comprehensive overview of the ECM strategy, together with photocopiable sheets, advice and examples of best practice. Key sections include the role and expectations of teachers in light of the programme; how to meet the five ECM outcomes for children; how to self-review, monitor and evaluate ECM aligned to the Ofsted inspection framework; and how to work in partnership with professionals from within schools and from external services. Tracey Alcock, Senior Publisher at David Fulton Publishers, explains: “Rita’s new book fills the gap for busy teachers trying to keep pace with the amount of new legislation regarding the Change for Children programme. Accessible and user-friendly, it provides a wealth of practical resources and positive solution-focused advice, as well as clear guidance on how to demonstrate progress on the Every Child Matters outcomes in line with Ofsted requirements". Every Child Matters: A Practical Guide for Teachers costs £15 and Every Child Matters: A Practical Guide for SENCOs costs £18 .
