Granada Learning Professional Development awarded Leading from the Middle contract

7 July 2006 – The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) has appointed Granada Learning Professional Development (GLPD) to implement its Leading from the Middle training programme in the South West Government Office region. Commencing in September, GLPD will train a total of 1,800 teachers across primary, secondary and special schools in the region over a three-year period. The contract win follows GLPD’s successful implementation of Leading from the Middle in the North East Government Office region.

Leading from the Middle (LftM) is a 10 month professional development programme for two to four middle leaders and a leadership coach from the same school. Individual applicants can also receive LftM training as part of a collaborative group. The programme supports the development of middle leaders in five key areas: leadership of innovation and change; knowledge and understanding of their role; enhancing self-confidence and skills as team leaders; building team capacity; and active engagement in self-directed change.

Alastair Durno, Director of Granada Learning Professional Development, explains: “Leading from the Middle is a highly respected programme that delivers powerful results. From developing and empowering middle leaders to building teams and school strategies, the programme offers valuable training for all schools. We are very pleased to be working with South West schools and look forward to implementing the programme in the coming months.”

GLPD provides professional development for schools at training centres and in schools. As well as the Leading from the Middle programme, it delivers the National College of School Leadership’s Strategic Leadership of ICT (SLICT) for headteachers. GLPD is also an approved provider of preparation for Higher Level Teaching Assistants for the Training and Development Agency.

About the National College for School Leadership

The National College for School Leadership offers opportunities to develop the potential of school leaders at every level and to enable their schools to work collaboratively with other schools.

85% of school leaders believe the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) is helping raise standards in schools – a seven per cent jump from 2005. [Source: survey of 800 telephone interviews with heads, deputies and other school leaders between January and March 2006 by independent research agency, EdComs.]

NCSL’s four key goals are:

•  to transform children’s achievement and well-being through excellent school leadership
•  to develop leadership within and beyond the school
•  to identify and grow tomorrow’s leaders
•  to create a ‘fit for purpose’ national college that is more strategic and offers school leaders even more leadership support.

The College’s Learning and Conference Centre in Nottingham is the focus for many of its activities, but NCSL programmes can also be accessed regionally through a network of providers.

NCSL programmes fit around teachers’ busy schedules, with much of the studying done in free time or in school, often via the Internet. Participants can also communicate with each other via the college’s popular online communities, talk2learn, which now has over 85,000 members.
