Vice Principal joins North Liverpool Academy

1 June, 2005 – The North Liverpool Academy has appointed John Rigby as its Vice Principal. Mr Rigby joins Kay Askew, the new Principal, in preparing for the Academy’s opening in September 2006. The Academy will be one of the largest in the UK with 1,750 pupils from the combined Anfield and Breckfield Comprehensives. It is set to bring about a significant improvement in secondary education in the area and will also benefit the local community through new educational and sporting facilities, as well as adult learning programmes.

Born and raised in Liverpool, John Rigby joins the Academy from St John Rigby Sixth Form College where he worked for 10 years as Head of Science, Division Leader and then Assistant Principal. The college has a reputation for academic success and its most recent Ofsted report identified its key strengths as strong leadership and direction, the support provided by the college staff and the level of high quality teaching. Mr Rigby was directly responsible for raising student achievement, quality assurance, quality improvement, staff development, improving teaching and learning, inspection, student support and enrolment.

Nigel Ward, Managing Director of Granada Learning, a co-sponsor of the Academy, said: “John is a welcome addition to the North Liverpool Academy’s management team. He brings with him much experience of school improvement and student support. He also believes in promoting excellence in all aspects of college life and enabling schools to serve their local communities. These characteristics make him the ideal candidate for VP of the Academy.”

John Latham, The University of Liverpool’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The appointments of both the Principal and the Vice Principal show that plans for the Academy are well under way. Parents will soon be able to apply for places for their children at the Academy. With this in mind, it’s worth noting that students who have enrolled with either Anfield or Breckfield for this September will be guaranteed a place at the Academy.”

Speaking about his appointment, John Rigby said: “I believe the Academy will be a source of excellence for the students in the north of the city, as well as the surrounding community, and I am looking forward to the new role.”

Prior to St John Rigby Sixth Form College, Mr Rigby was the Co-ordinator of Health Studies and Biology at Priestly Sixth Form College, Warrington; Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator at St Benedict’s, Birkenhead (11 – 18 Comprehensive); Head of Biology at Higherside Knowsley (11 – 16 Comprehensive); and Science teacher at Stockbridge Village Knowsley (11 – 18 Comprehensive).
