North Liverpool Academy given the go ahead27 June 2005 - Plans for the North Liverpool Academy have been given final approval by the Secretary of State for Education, Ruth Kelly. The Academy will now move into the final phase of its development. The North Liverpool Academy will replace Breckfield and Anfield Comprehensives in the north of the city. It will have a business and enterprise specialism and will be open to 1,750 pupils aged 11 - 18. The Academy will be a brand new state-of-the-art school sponsored by educational publisher Granada Learning and the University of Liverpool. In addition, a third sponsor will contribute to the building phase of the project. Stanley Fink, the Chief Executive of Man Group plc, a leading global provider of alternative investment products and one of the world’s largest futures brokers, will be an active contributor to the Academy, but will leave the day-to-day management to the Trust Board. The Trust Board is led by Granada Learning and the University of Liverpool. Nigel Ward, Managing Director of Granada Learning, said: “This Academy aims to revolutionise learning in the local area by providing the skills, facilities, expertise, vision, drive, commitment and energy needed to help young people achieve their potential. We look forward to creating an excellent Academy in north Liverpool, and one that will serve the community well for many generations to come. Stanley joining the team is excellent news and he will provide the Academy with great levels of resource and expertise.” John Latham, The University of Liverpool’s Chief Operating Officer, added: “We are thrilled that plans for the new Academy have been approved and are really looking forward to seeing the Academy come to life over the next few months.”
Lord Adonis, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education, said: "The North Liverpool Academy is a really exciting opportunity for the pupils and community of Anfield and Breckfield and I am confident that over time it will help raise educational standards in the area. I am very impressed with the plans for the new school and am very much looking forward to monitoring the Academy’s development.” Academies are a new type of school which aim to bring a fresh approach to school leadership, teaching and learning. Publicly funded but independently run sponsors generally provide up to £2m towards the building of an Academy. The Department for Education and Skills provides the remainder of funding and also covers the operational costs of the school. Academies draw on the expertise of the sponsor and have the freedom to try new ways of teaching within an innovative and stimulating environment in consultation and agreement with both the local LEA and the DfES.

Notes to editors Academies are all ability schools established by sponsors from business, faith or voluntary groups working in highly innovative partnerships with central Government and local education partners. Sponsors and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) provide the capital costs for the Academy. Running costs are met in full by the DfES. At least 200 Academies will be open or in the pipeline by 2010. A key element of the London Challenge is the aim of establishing 60 Academies in London by 2010.
