GL Assessment enhances e-assessment portfolio with Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning Digital

5 October 2009 – GL Assessment has today expanded its e-assessment portfolio with the launch of online versions of its well-established Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning test series. The digital versions will run on GL Assessment’s powerful online testing system, Testwise, which has now delivered over one million online tests to schools in the UK and over 70 countries worldwide. Verbal Reasoning Digital and Non-Verbal Reasoning Digital mirror their popular paper-based equivalents, but offer added flexibility for teachers, instant scoring and reporting, and a more motivating experience for pupils.

Emma Rees, publisher at GL Assessment, said: “The Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests are a series of standardised tests that measure pupils’ wider reasoning ability and assess their potential. As such, they can be used to inform individual target-setting and are ideal for helping teachers tailor their teaching to meet the learning needs of every child, as required by the Children’s Plan and recommended by Sir Jim Rose’s Review of the Primary Curriculum.”

The Verbal Reasoning Digital tests can be used to gain information about pupils’ ability to acquire new concepts and other information that may not be evident from their usual class work. Results indicate how pupils assimilate new information and highlight pupils’ skills in verbal thinking, above and beyond their formal literacy skills. The online tests are available for three age groups: 8–9, 10–11 and 12–13 years.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning Digital tests offer an effective way of assessing pupils’ ability to use verbal and non-verbal thinking together, which can then be used to assess their future potential. The tests give teachers a reliable indication of how easily a pupil may acquire new concepts in a wide range of subjects, including maths, science and design and technology. The tests can also be used to support the renewed emphasis on cross-curricular studies, which follows reports from Ofsted and the QCDA that some of the most effective learning occurs when connections are made between subjects. The Non-Verbal Reasoning Digital tests are available for three age groups: 8–9, 10–11 and 12–14 years.

One of the key advantages of Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Digital is the immediate scoring of tests, saving teachers hours of marking time. Digital test delivery also removes the burden of test administration, as all practice questions, instructions and timings are computer-administered.

As soon as the tests have been completed, teachers receive detailed diagnostic reports that allow them to analyse results with ease and integrate them with other school information systems. Reports for the Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests include pupils’ results by Standard Age Score; a comparison of group with national scores; and comparisons by gender, ethnicity and free school meals. If both tests are taken, additional combined reports are available, including a profile of pupils’ visual / verbal abilities and KS2 or KS3 national curriculum level indicators. Testwise also produces a Local Authority cluster report that provides the results and analysis of all schools in the LA that have taken the tests.

A number of GL Assessment’s other major test series are now available online, including the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT), Progress in Maths, Progress in English, Suffolk Reading Scale and Group Reading Test. To see more, please visit www.gl-assessment.co.uk/online.
