NASEN and Granada Learning sign joint-publishing agreement

The Granada Learning Group and NASEN have announced a new partnership in which all future NASEN books will be jointly published with David Fulton Publishers. The agreement will also provide NASEN members with significant discounts to special needs resources from across the Granada Learning Group and other educational publishers through a partnership with education shopping portal, OneStopEducation.co.uk. This includes special needs software specialists SEMERC and nferNelson, the leading UK provider of tests and assessments.

Chris Darlington, President of NASEN, said: “The partnership with Granada Learning starts a new chapter in NASEN's development to both increase our influence to a much wider audience, to provide further opportunities to maximise our existing publications and to develop new books to support special educational needs practice. NASEN's publications have always been highly regarded and we hope that this alliance will enable even more of our expert writers to have work published and distributed to a much wider audience.”

“As President of NASEN, it gives me great pleasure to launch this new venture during my presidential year and I am looking forward to working with all those involved to ensure that this partnership is successful,” continues Mr. Darlington.

Christopher Glennie, Publishing Director of David Fulton Publishers, said: “We are delighted to bring NASEN's heritage of supporting special needs education together with our publishing expertise in this area. We will be able to build on each other's strengths and have already planned a range of resources to help SENCOs and mainstream educationalists, as well as parents and carers, to teach and look after children with disabilities.”

The discounts offered to NASEN members are available from the OneStopEducation.co.uk/nasen shopping portal. Once members have registered with the website, they can order resources using a credit card or their school purchasing system.

The first books to be co-published by NASEN and David Fulton Publishers will be available from January 2005 and are:

•  Special Needs and Drug Education (Richard Ives) aims to help teachers of pupils with special educational needs to address drugs issues in schools, assess what their contribution should be and identify the particular issues associated with their pupils.

•  Inclusion and Dyslexia: Classroom Approaches for Assessment, Teaching and Learning (Gavin Reid) provides teachers with an understanding of dyslexia and offers practical approaches that can be used for assessment, teaching and learning.   The key theme of the book is inclusion and suggests that intervention for dyslexic children should focus on the barriers to learning, and the most prominent of these may be aspects of the curriculum and how the curriculum is presented.

•  Supporting Mathematical Thinking (edited by Anne Watson, Jenny Houssart and Caroline Roaf) celebrates the enormous amount of work done by subject specialists in mainstream classrooms to promote inclusive practice. It seems in these instances that inclusion has become a reality; an indication of the bridge building going on between ‘special' and ‘mainstream' as proposed in the 1997 Green Paper and its sequel, A Programme for Action (DfEE, 1998).
