nferNelson launches new World Class Arena series for gifted and talented students

nferNelson, the UK's leading independent provider of assessments, is today launching the next in the World Class Arena series of resources for gifted and talented students.   mathsinsight 9 and mathsinsight 13 are sets of paper and computer-based teaching materials that have been written to develop mathematical thinking amongst students in the top 10% ability range of pupils aged 9 and 13 respectively.

mathsinsight aims to develop a depth of understanding and application for gifted pupils both within and beyond the scope of the curriculum for these age groups, as defined by the national curriculum and the National Numeracy Strategy Framework. The resources encourage students to use and apply the mathematics they have already learned. For instance, they may be asked to combine elements of knowledge, sustain reasoning through a sequence of steps, or apply knowledge in a tricky or unfamiliar problem setting.

Tim Cornford, director of assessment at nferNelson, said: “mathsinsight was developed after much research into the abilities and needs of gifted and talented students and is a strong successor to the earlier World Class Arena resources.   As World Class Arena materials are leading the way in nurturing gifted and talented students, we believe mathsinsight will provide teachers, pupils and parents with the materials to develop a much greater depth of mathematical understanding.”

mathsinsight consists of five different types of mathematical problems. Starter questions require high-level reasoning and are designed to sharpen students' thinking.   The other questions are designed to stretch the abilities of the students and challenge their thinking. One of the highlights of mathsinsight is the fact that it emphasises the need for students to describe how they came to their conclusions. By challenging their assumptions that there are only ‘right' answers to problems, the program broadens their reasoning skills.

Using the CD provided, teachers can select up to five problems that students can attempt as individuals or in groups. Students using the CD can try the computer-based question on screen and print the screen containing their answers for marking or discussion purposes. Teachers can project the questions on to a whiteboard for whole-class use.

The mathsinsight Teacher's Guide provides suggestions for how to use and extend the questions to support teachers in developing their best mathematicians. It includes key points that highlight the particular difficulties that the question presents, useful starting points from which to introduce the question, and further information about the question.
