nferNelson wins QCA World Class Arena projectnferNelson, the UK's leading independent provider of assessments, has won the publishing contract for the World Class Arena (WCA) initiative. Established in 2000 by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) under the auspices of the Department for Education and Skills, WCA is designed to identify and nurture high performing pupils through a range of teaching, learning and assessment materials for students, teachers and parents.
World Class Arena consists of a range of materials - part computer-based, part paper-based – that concentrate on mathematics and problem solving for the 8 - 11 and 12 - 14 age groups. The assessment elements of the resources, World Class Tests, are designed to assess high-level skills and identify gifted and talented students. They have been used in 16 countries, including Australia, Hong Kong and the USA. They are also used as entry criteria for the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth in England.
Tim Cornford, director of assessment at nferNelson, said: “We are delighted to have won the World Class Arena contract. The materials are well received by students and teachers alike and its reputation is acknowledged worldwide. For students, the resources provide challenging and interesting materials to develop their skills. Teachers benefit as the resources enable them to certificate the top 10% of pupils outside any statutory assessment framework. World Class Arena is a considerable step forward for teaching gifted and talented pupils and we look forward to taking the resources to an even wider audience.”
Jeremy Tafler, director, World Class Tests, at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, said: "We look forward to working closely with nferNelson to expand World Class Arena into other subject areas and for children of different ages. nferNelson's experience of producing widely used and respected assessments, combined with its understanding of the latest innovations in e assessment, mean we can work with them to build on the achievements of World Class Arena so far."
