nferNelson unveils Progress in English Digital25 May 2006 – Leading independent test publisher, nferNelson, has extended its e-assessment portfolio with the addition of Progress in English 7 – 11 Digital, an online version of the short form of its popular standardised test series for 7 to 11 year olds. Exclusively developed for nferNelson by the National Foundation for Educational Research, Progress in English 7 – 11 is designed to help teachers identify pupils’ specific strengths and needs in literacy. Used year on year, it enables teachers to identify any areas of difficulty a child might be experiencing, set targets and monitor progress at individual, class or school level. Progress in English 7 – 11 Digital runs on Testwise, nferNelson’s powerful online assessment portal. Teachers simply have to schedule the test and provide pupils with internet access in order to sit the assessment. Linked closely to the curriculum, questions cover spelling, grammar and reading comprehension, using narrative and non-narrative texts. Pupils are guided through the process with practice questions before they get started, and can take the test using the mouse (for 7 – 9 year olds) and mouse and keyboard (for 10 – 11 year olds). The digital tests have also been equated with the paper versions to guarantee continuity of assessment data for schools switching from paper to PC. Progress in English 7 – 11 Digital offers teachers greater flexibility in administering the tests. Results are instantly marked, analysed and delivered directly to the teacher’s desktop. Reports provide raw / standardised age score, a current National Curriculum level and indicative National Test levels for each pupil. Teachers can also export data from and into their existing school management information system (such as SIMS). Ian Mooney, Head of nferNelson, said: “Teachers across the UK already use Progress in English test booklets for rich diagnostic assessment of their pupils’ ability in literacy. The new digital version takes the assessment one stage further. As well as the numerous advantages for teachers, we have had a great deal of feedback to say that the online environment means that children actually enjoy taking assessments now.” Progress in English 7 – 11 Digital is the latest e-assessment offering from nferNelson. Levels 8 – 11 are available now and level 7 will follow in September 2006. Other digital tests include: Cognitive Abilities Test 3 Digital, Progress in Maths 6 – 14 Digital, Suffolk Reading Scale 2 Digital, ICT Self-Rating Scale and QCA Digital Test Bank.
