North Liverpool Academy appoints Principal

9 May, 2005 - The North Liverpool Academy has appointed Kay Askew as Principal, in preparation for the Academy’s opening in September 2006. The Academy will be one of the largest in the UK with 1,750 pupils from the combined Anfield and Breckfield Comprehensives. It is set to bring about a significant improvement in secondary education facilities and will also play a key part in the regeneration of the local community.

Kay Askew joins the Academy with 11 years experience of running an 11 – 16 mixed comprehensive. As Head of Charlton School, Telford, she managed the school as it expanded from 750 to 1160 students, and saw her students achieve outstanding GCSE success in core subjects, with a 78% pass rate. Under her leadership, the school achieved a position in the UK’s top 25% of schools for “value added” and it achieved A in Ofsted’s Performance and Assessment Reports (Panda) in all aspects.

Mrs Askew also oversaw the implementation of an innovative curriculum from Key Stages 3 to A level, and supported curriculum and joint engineering apprenticeships. This achievement is particularly significant for the development of the Academy’s curriculum. Her success led Ofsted to identify her as demonstrating strong leadership. The Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers also recognised her as an “excellent head teacher”.

John Latham, The University of Liverpool’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “In addition to Kay’s record of success in leading schools, we were particularly moved by her unshakeable belief that schools can change lives and that all students deserve a high quality learning experience.”

Denise Watson, Liverpool Academy Project Manager, is delighted with the appointment. “We were searching for excellence and we found it with Kay. The Academy is an enormous undertaking and we needed to find the right candidate to drive it forward.”

Nigel Ward, Managing Director of Granada Learning, added: “ We have taken our time to get the best Principal we could for the Academy. In Kay, we have someone of great talent and ability. Her excellent reputation is well deserved and I look forward to working with her to create an excellent Academy in North Liverpool, and one that will serve the community well for many generations to come.”

The interview panel consisted of representatives from the DfES and Liverpool LEA, two Trust sponsors and a Professor of the Liverpool Business School. In the last round of interviews, Mrs Askew was also interviewed by six students from Anfield and Breckfield Comprehensives.

Speaking about her appointment, Kay Askew said: “I am thrilled to have been selected for this important role. I have seen how good schools can make a difference to the lives of students, families and communities, and I will ensure that the Liverpool Academy will transform the education, confidence and vision of students in the area.”

Prior to Charlton School, Mrs Askew was the Deputy Head at Alderbrook School (1991 – 1994); Deputy Co-ordinator at the Birmingham Catholic Partnership (1989 – 1991); Head of Music and BTEC Co-ordinator at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic School (1983 – 1989); and Head of Music at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic School, Ward End Hall and Riland Bedford School.

Recruitment for a new Vice Principal commences this week.
