SEMERC launches resource to support memory recall

9 February 2006 - Inclusion software publisher, SEMERC, has today unveiled a new CD-ROM and photocopiable workbook for children who need additional support improving memory, attention, listening and specific literacy skills. Think About! 1 is designed for children aged seven and above, including learners who may have specific learning difficulties associated with dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorders, language disorders, and concentration and memory lapses. The engaging and motivating presentation of animations also make it appealing for older and more reluctant learners.

Scenes in the life of two characters, Jasmine and Harry, form the centrepiece of the program. The real-life settings are all age-appropriate and include scenes about a recycling centre, gardening, camping, the supermarket, the library, fishing and skateboarding. It is intended that teachers can go on and explore various subjects that are introduced in the stories.

After viewing each scene, the learner is asked different kinds of questions on the story, all of which are designed to encourage memory recall. The questions include: match the sentence; true or false; sequencing pictures; sequencing sentences; and multiple choice. Learners can then move on to the paper-based materials contained in the workbook, away from the computer.

Laura Cryer, Publisher at SEMERC, said: “Because we live in a highly visual world, children probably don’t have enough experience of auditory stimulus and practice for listening. If children have poor spoken language and understanding skills, they are likely to have problems with their learning, behaviour and social skills. Think About! 1 uses ICT to reduce the stress of writing for children with learning difficulties, while audio support is used to help reading skills.”

Think About! 1 includes a range of accessibility options, such as switch access and voice input. Clip art and student records are also available via teacher settings so that the resource can be used to suit the individual’s interests, learning styles and curriculum requirements. The accompanying workbook provides full and simplified text of the stories, together with inferential questions.
